Florida Freshwater Fishing Forecast for April 26-May 3, 2026
Sunday's Comprehensive Fishing Article for Florida's Freshwater Anglers
Fair to Good Fishing During Pre-Front Conditions and Weak Full Moon Phase
The Florida Freshwater Fishing Forecast for April 26-May 3, 2026, gives anglers a weak full moon 7-day phase which starts Tuesday, and a spring weather forecast that predicts enough weather changes and favorable conditions to create fair to good fishing for the next four days, and will continue through the second half of the week.
All fishing factors considered, anglers will have pre-front conditions this morning as a south wind gradually switches from the west by the late morning hours. A weak high-pressure front will enter the state this afternoon and produce ideal wind speeds of 8-12 mph from the north for the next two days. And some cloud-cover will serve to cause an uptick in fish adjustment activity as fish move back and forth from protective cover, and atmospheric pressure will occur just enough Monday and Tuesday to cause fish to adjust upwards into shoreline shallows.
Wednesday pre-front conditions will occur again as a minor low-pressure system enters the state, causing a minor drop in pressure but enough to cause some fish adjustment downward to the outside edges of shoreline feeding areas. When the winds begin to come from the south and switch to the west, I predict fish will feed at above average rates most likely during the underfoot period in the late morning to early afternoon hours.
The second half of the week a 50-50 cloud-to-sun condition will occur along with a west to southwest wind Thursday through Sunday. Wind speeds will climb to 15 mph Saturday but otherwise an ideal fishing wind of 8-12 mph will occur. Water temperatures will be rising into the middle to upper 70-degree range with water surface temps peaking at 80 or slightly higher by midafternoon. And a rainy season weather pattern is forecasted to begin next Sunday.
So, pre-front conditions and a weak full moon will produce fairly good fishing, but I don’t believe it will be great, nor excellent, due to the weak lunar influence which will progressively become weaker over the next ten days. I do expect fish to feed more so during the solar noon period as the lunar influence diminishes. And with the full moon occurring Friday night, the majority of the fish populations will be in a 12-hr. daily feeding pattern---primary feeding during the midday underfoot period and minor feeding during the bright light of the weak full moon.
During the end of April and the month of May water temperatures are ideal to enable fish to feed-at-will, and they are currently feeding at annually high rates rights and will continue to do so until water temps climb into the mid-eighty-degree range and oxygen levels decline as a result.
Solar-Lunar Factor: Solar noon occurs at 1:23:50 p.m. EST. today, and will decline over the next ten days to 1:22:39 p.m. DST EST. Today we are five days past the lunar high and three days past the first quarter moon. The full moon occurs Friday followed by the orbit apogee three days later and the lunar low the day after the lunar apogee. Therefore, you should note that the first half of the weak full moon 7-day phase will produce better than the second half due to the stronger lunar effect and pre-front conditions on Wednesday.
Weather Factors: The afore mentioned pre-front conditions today and Wednesday will cause a greater percentage of the fish populations to feed at the same time, during the underfoot period, because that is when the front is forecasted to take effect in the heartland of Florida.
A consistent westerly wind will occur Wednesday through Sunday, which is rare for the spring season. The 180-degree wind pattern shift will cause increased fish adjustment activity as fish follow the wind-driven food-chain to the east sides of the lake and west sides of the islands. And wind speeds will be strong enough to push water on medium to large lakes, especially next weekend. And you should watch the weather forecast as the week advances to see if today’s extended weather forecast is going to. accurate and pre-front conditions occur Saturday. If true, the day after the full moon could be very good.
Solunar - Weather Variable: Over the next ten days, water temperatures, sun-to-cloud 50-50 condition, wind direction and pre-front weather factors will become the dominate daily factors in causing fish to feed. But the moon will influence daily feeding activity today through Wednesday then rapidly decline during the second half of the week.
During monthly weak lunar influence period (12 days centered on the day of the lunar low) fish populations tend to feed primarily during the solar noon period, 12-3 p.m. And if a even mix of sun and clouds occur at that time, the bite noticeably improves. Such will be the case during the second half of the week and will occur when the rainy season weather pattern prevails.
Major Solar-Lunar Period: Today the moon is underfoot at 9:43 a.m. producing a 5-feed rating from 8:30-11 a.m. Daily the underfoot moon occurs later by an average of 42 min and gradually improves to a 6 rating by Wednesday, during the 10:30 a.m.-1:15 p.m. hours.
Minor Solar Lunar Periods: Today the moonrise occurs at 3:37 p.m. producing a 3-4 feed rating from 2:30-4:45 p.m. Daily the moonrise occurs later by an average of 55 min and remains at the same feed rating.
A second minor period happens today when the moon is overhead at 10:05 p.m. producing a 3-feed rating from 9-11 p.m. Daily the overhead moon occurs later by an average of 45 min and gradually improves to a 4-5 rating by Friday when the full moon occurs 12-2 a.m.
A third minor period happens today when the moonset occurs at 3:53 a.m. producing a 2-3 feed rating from 3-5 a.m. Daily the moonset occurs later by an average of 29 min and gradually improve to a 3-4 rating by Thursday during the 4:45-7:30 a.m. hours.
Best Fishing Days: Today and Wednesday’s pre-front conditions will produce the best fishing conditions of the next four days. And during the second half of the week the full moon will be just strong enough to cause above-average fishing during the underfoot period---solar noon periods Thursday through Saturday.
Lake Istokpoga S68 Spillway and Lake Level Status: Lake level average is currently at 36.90 NAVD88 with four S68 spillway gates closed. The NAVD88 Offset to NGVD29 is + 1.16 feet = 38.06NGVD29. Current maximum high level is 38.75’ NGVD and the low level is 37.50’ NVGD.
Prime Monthly Periods: April 28-May 3 weak full moon, 13-20 strong super new moon, May 28-June 2 weak full moon, June 10-17 strongest super new moon possible-solid 10 rating for 4 of the 7-day phase due to the orbit perigee and lunar high occurring within the same 24 hours of the new moon.
