New Moon Anglers Find Success in Deep Vegetation
The Florida Freshwater Fishing Forecast for June 14-21, 2026, gives anglers the second half of a very strong super new moon 7-day phase and a rainy season weather forecast. All fishing factors considered, anglers will find aggressive feeding fish if they locate normal healthy oxygenates areas, which could be a significant challenge due to the high-water temperatures.
The key for success will be to be on the water when extended periods of bright sunshine occur in the hours leading up to the overhead new moon period during the midday to early afternoon hours and to fish in the areas where oxygen production occurs.
In shallow lakes this will be more difficult to accomplish. Healthy vegetation at 6–8-foot depths will be the best choice to find active feeders. However, fish could move up to shallow areas briefly to feed and migrate deeper to enable normal digestion. Finding the lake elevation change areas which lead to healthy shoreline vegetation will be the key.
In deeper lakes finding the deeper vegetation at 8–18-foot depths which has healthy vegetation will be the winning strategy. The cooler depths hold oxygen at a much higher rate compared to the much hotter shallower vegetation areas. 12-foot grass bed areas have always been my favorite fishing areas during the Florida summer rainy season weather pattern. These areas receive enough sunlight to cause enough oxygen production to hold fish all summer long.
New moon anglers need to find healthy vegetation to experience success. The deeper the vegetation, the greater the success.
Major Solar-Lunar Period: Today the moon is overhead at 12:59 p.m. producing a 10-feed rating from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Daily the overhead moon occurs later by an average of 63 min and remains at the same feed rating until Tuesday when it diminishes by one number. Thursday a feed rating of 7 will occur from 3-7 p.m. and I predict the overhead period will remain at this rating through next weekend.
Minor Solar Lunar Periods: Today the moonset occurs at 8:21 p.m. producing a 6-7 feed rating from 7-10 p.m. Daily the moonset occurs later by an average of 58 min and diminishes gradually to a 4-feed rating by Tuesday night from 9:30-11:30 p.m.
A second minor period happens today when the moonrise occurs at 5:37 a.m. producing a 6-7 feed rating from 4:30-7:30 a.m. Daily the moonrise occurs later by an average of 58 min with a feed rating which remains consistent until the second half of the week when it diminishes by one number during the mid to late morning hours.
A third minor period happens when the moon is underfoot at 12:25 a.m. today, producing a 3-4 feed rating from 11:30 p.m.-1:30 a.m. Daily the underfoot moon occurs later by an average of 64 min and remains at the same feed rating.
Best Fishing Days: Today the new moon occurs while at its orbit perigee and lunar high positions, which means it’s a very strong Super New Moon, as strong as a Super New Moon can be. Anglers can expect fish to be experiencing very fast metabolism speeds and, in most lakes, aggressive feeding will occur.
But in low oxygen producing bodies of water a stressed condition will occur due to digestion stress caused by inadequate oxygen rates, especially during the morning hours and cloudy overcast conditions. Fish will want to feed but will be unable to digest food at normal speeds resulting in fish acting lethargic.
In healthy water bodies which produce adequate oxygen levels normal digestion and feeding will occur where oxygen production occurs. And the deeper the vegetation the greater the level of oxygen. I have found that when water temps climb to 85 or greater degrees in the shallows, the fish move deeper until their bodies regain normal digestion, which is usually at the 10–18-foot depths.
Find the deeper oxygen producing vegetation and you’ll find aggressive feeding fish. The best fishing days-periods over the next four days will occur when extended periods of bright sunshine occur during the major feeding period and within the oxygen production areas. Find these areas during these conditions and you’ll have a great day on the water.
Lake Istokpoga S68 Spillway and Lake Level Status: Lake level average is currently at 36.22 NAVD88 with four S8 spillway gates closed. The NAVD88 Offset to NGVD29 is + 1.16 feet = 37.38NGVD29. Current maximum high level is 38.25’ NGVD and the low level is 37.50’ NVGD which means the lake is 2 inches below the min level.
Prime Monthly Periods: June 14-17 last half of the strongest super new moon possible-solid 10 rating for 4 of the 7-day phase due to the orbit perigee and lunar high occurring within the same 24 hours of the new moon. July 11-17 very strong super new moon phase, 26-31very weak full moon phase, August 9-15new moon phase, 25-30 full moon phase.
